Council Meeting Recap: Commission Appointments

Watch the full City Council meeting here.

Surf Pride Moment: The night kicked off with recognition of the San Dieguito Academy Surf Team đźŹ„‍♂️ — coach, students, and proud supporters packed the chambers. A feel-good start.

Oral Communications: Seven speakers tackled everything from cannabis retail and Highway 101 safety in Leucadia đźš— to bike safety education 🚲 and even the â€śLove Your Neighbor” sign drama in Village Park. Yes — it was that kind of night.

Commission Appointments Take Over the Night: The main event: nearly three hours of commission appointments. Each applicant got three minutes — even those applying to multiple commissions. Council repeatedly noted the “large number of applicants.” Seven additional weighed in — four backing candidates, three opposing Julie Thunder and/or Natalie Settoon. The outcome? Incumbents largely held their seats, and several majority-aligned applicants were appointed. An unsurprising result

Food For Thought: If advisory commissions are meant to reflect the full community, should appointments consistently mirror the Council majority’s base — or broaden representation?
